A Remnant Shall Return

Isaiah 10:20-23 KJV

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.”

As many of you know, I’m not so much a word-by-word teacher, but in this case, I think the text has several levels in some places, and although the main theme is rather obvious (A remnant of Israel will return to follow the Lord), some of the references and phrases should be studied.

20 “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.”

Word Study:

In that day=>the day of the Lord

Stay upon him=>depend upon him

That smote them=>defeated them

Scripture Clarification (who is him?):

“So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath–pileser king of Assyria, saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.” 2 Kings 16:7 KJV

Ahaz had bribed Tiglath-pileser to protect his kingdom (Judah) from Syria and Israel. Thus, the scripture says that when the Day of the Lord comes, God’s people will not have to depend on other powerful kings for safety, but will depend only upon the Lord.

21 “The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.”

Why shall they return? A wonderful prophesy!

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 KJV

22 “For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.”

Word Study: The consumption decreed=>the destruction

Further scriptural support (reiterated and enhanced):

“Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.” Romans 9:27-28 KJV

23 “For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.”

Word Study: Consumption, even determined=>determined end

Further Scriptural Support:

“Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.” Isaiah 28:22 KJV

“And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” Daniel 9:27 KJV

“For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.” Romans 9:28 KJV
