Balancing Justice with Grace

Acts‬ ‭7:48-53‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? Hath not my hand made all these things? Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.”

This is the final part of the sermon Steven preached just before being stoned. In the first 3 verses:‭‭

“Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? Hath not my hand made all these things?”

He ends his brief summary of History and then accuses the current generation of following in their ancestor’s footsteps.

“Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.”

God (in his Grace) has had great patience in seeing betrayal after betrayal, murder after murder, all breaking God’s law (and his heart). Now he has given the ultimate sign of Grace (His son – the “Just One”) and he was murdered too!

It is thus time for the pendulum to swing from God’s grace and mercy, to his Holy and Just aspect.

It is interesting to note that this moment is pivotal in that five verses later, Steven is stoned. Thus, the end of Steven’s ministry…but present there was Saul (Soon to be Paul) whose ministry becomes one of seeking out a people that will accept God’s offer of mercy and Grace!
